Lassa Fever Claims One Life in Oyo as Government Moves Swiftly to Contain Outbreak


Oyo State has recorded a tragic loss following an outbreak of Lassa fever, with one death confirmed and five cases currently under management across affected communities.


The State Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, disclosed this during a press briefing in Ibadan, assuring residents that the government has acted quickly to curb the spread. According to her, emergency response protocols were immediately activated in line with national and global health standards.



Patients diagnosed with the virus are currently receiving treatment at designated isolation centres, including the Infectious Disease Centre in Olodo and the University College Hospital isolation unit. Health officials are also monitoring over 200 individuals who may have had contact with the infected persons.


To prevent further spread, the state has intensified surveillance and rolled out measures such as environmental sanitation, fumigation, and widespread public sensitisation campaigns. Essential medicines have also been prepositioned in key locations.


Ajetunmobi commended Governor Seyi Makinde for approving emergency funding, a move she said enabled a rapid and coordinated response to the situation.



Residents are being urged to take precautionary steps seriously maintain proper hygiene, store food safely, avoid contact with rodents, and promptly report symptoms such as fever, weakness, or unusual bleeding to the nearest health facility.


Other top government officials, including Ademola Aderinto and Dotun Oyelade, reiterated that awareness campaigns and environmental control measures have been stepped up to protect communities.


Despite the confirmed cases, health authorities have reassured the public that the situation remains under control. Residents are advised to stay calm, stay informed, and cooperate with ongoing health interventions as the state works to fully contain the outbreak.
