A leading socio-political group, GSM Advocates, has said that Governor Seyi Makinde's performance in Oyo State demonstrates the kind of purposeful, people-centered leadership Nigeria needs in 2027.
In a statement issued to journalists in Ibadan on Tuesday, the group noted that Nigerians are no longer interested in empty promises or political rhetoric. Instead, they are yearning for leaders whose records speak for themselves through tangible results, transparency, and genuine concern for the people.
According to the group, while many politicians focus on winning elections, only a few truly win the hearts of the people they serve.
"The greatest achievement of any leader is not the applause received on campaign stages, but the smiles of ordinary citizens whose lives have been positively transformed. Real leadership is measured by trust, impact, and hope. That is the legacy Governor Seyi Makinde continues to build," the statement read.
GSM Advocates said the transformation witnessed across Oyo State over the past seven years reflects what can be achieved when leadership places people above politics. They argued that Makinde's administration has consistently prioritized prudent management of resources, inclusive governance, and projects that directly improve the lives of citizens.
The group highlighted achievements in education, healthcare, infrastructure, security, agriculture, and youth empowerment. It pointed to the renovation and equipping of over 200 primary healthcare centres, recruitment of teachers and healthcare professionals, upgrades of public schools, and extensive road construction across the state's three senatorial districts as clear evidence of effective governance.
Drawing a comparison with the current APC-led federal administration, GSM Advocates expressed concern over the country's rising cost of living, growing insecurity, deteriorating infrastructure, and policies they believe have placed additional burdens on ordinary Nigerians.
"For years, Nigerians have been asked to endure hardship. In Oyo State, Governor Makinde has given people reasons to believe that government can truly work for them. That is the difference between governance driven by propaganda and governance driven by results," the statement added.
The group said Makinde's leadership style, anchored on transparency, accountability, citizen engagement, and the completion of inherited projects would bring a refreshing approach to governance if replicated at the national level.
They also praised his commitment to youth and economic development, citing investments in skills acquisition, support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), technology initiatives, and agricultural programmes aimed at creating employment opportunities and empowering young Nigerians.
"Nigeria's greatest asset is its people, particularly its youth. Governor Makinde has shown that when government invests in people, economic growth naturally follows. His leadership creates opportunities instead of limiting them," GSM Advocates stated.
The group stressed that the 2027 presidential election should be decided by competence, integrity, and proven performance rather than party affiliation. According to them, Makinde has consistently demonstrated these qualities through his stewardship of Oyo State.
They concluded that Nigeria deserves a leader who sees public office as an opportunity to serve, not a privilege to be enjoyed—a leader who measures success by the number of lives improved rather than political titles accumulated.
