Easy win for Mumbai Indians

CENTURION: A propulsive, unbeaten 70 (59b, 7x4, 3x6) by Dwayne Bravo kept Mumbai Indians’ IPL hopes alive as the team hammered Kings XI Punjab by eight wickets at the SuperSport Park here on Wednesday.

Bravo forged an unbeaten third wicket partnership of 82 with Sachin Tendulkar (41, 29b, 4x4, 1x6) and chased down the target of 120 with over three overs to spare.

The batting performance complemented Mumbai’s tight bowling that had earlier restricted Kings to a modest 119 after Yuvraj Singh had elected to bat.

Mumbai started off its pursuit on the wrong foot as Sanath Jayasuriya slashed Brett Lee straight to Mota at third man.

Sreesanth smacked

Bravo exploded when Sreesanth came on in the fifth over, slamming 21 runs that included a towering six straight over the bowler’s head.

Piyush Chawla trapped Rahane in his first over, but Bravo continued his rampage, guiding the side to a secure 74 for two at the strategic timeout.

Tendulkar got into the act soon after, sweeping Chawla for six over long on and spanking consecutive fours off Goel. Fittingly, it was a savage pull by Bravo off Pathan that gave Mumbai the winning runs.

Sohal sparkles

Earlier, Kings was stopped in its tracks by Mumbai’s slower bowlers after opener Sunny Sohal’s initial fireworks (43, 23b, 5x4, 3x6) had boosted it to 50 in 5.3 overs.

Simon Katich and Irfan Pathan were out for nought and it took a misfield and a direct hit, both by Sachin Tendulkar at cover, to send Sohal back.

With Punjab three down, off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who went on to win the Man of the Match, bowled two overs for five runs and claimed Kumar Sangakkara after the batsman had scratched around for eight.

Kings was 70 for four after 10 overs and lost wickets regularly thereafter.
