Tiirupati, 07 July (P.R.O) Smt. Pratibha Patil, Hon’ble President of India, Inaugurated the TTDs Amruthotsavams in Mahati Auditorium on July, 7.

On this occasion the President of India addressed gathering, the speech is as follows:

I deem it a privilege and an honor to participate in the Amruthotsavam of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, which in the name of Lord Balaji, has been serving the humanity for the last 75 years.

Legend says that Lord Venkateswara, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, emerged on the Tirumala hills for the benefit of people in the Kaliyuga. History confirms that since the day Lord’s existence here, came to light some eleven centuries ago; people have been coming here to worship Him. Thousands of devotees climb up the seven hills every day to the temple situated at a height of 2200 feet above the sea level. It is their devotion and faith that draws them here.

I am glad to note that the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has in the last 75 years come a long way in providing basic amenities for pilgrims. Since my first visit to this temple some decades ago till this day, I notice there has been several additions to the facilities available to the pilgrims. I still remember the days when pilgrims used to rush in search of shelter when it rained as they climbed the hills on foot. Today, the entire footpath on the ghat is covered with shelter. I am informed that in the recent decades, improved accommodation and transport facilities have been provided and also arrangements for food and prasadams have been improved.

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Board, since it was formed 75 years ago, has done considerable work in the social field. It is the responsibility of the governing body that it should serve the Lord and alongside also serve humanity. I am told that many social initiatives in the field of education, medical treatment and rehabilitation of the physically challenged and the economically backward have been taken. Sri Venkateswara Poor Home, set up with the assistance of the Government of India, caters to the needs of leprosy patients. It is probably one of the largest in India and admits persons suffering from various forms of leprosy from all over India. During treatment, patients also undergo occupational therapy where they are trained in skills like carpentry, shoe-making and weaving. The training helps in the rehabilitation of patients in society. Sri Venkateswara Bala Madir, an orphanage established in 1943, provides boarding and lodging to destitute girls and boys of all castes and creeds during the course of their study. Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has also been running schools for the deaf and dumb, a surgery and rehabilitation center for the disabled, hospitals and several academic institutions. I would encourage it to continue its service to the community.

Today, I inaugurated the Venkateswara Oriental college Building. I strongly feel that education is the most important tool for empowering the people of a country. In a fast emerging knowledge based society, I call upon the children and youth of our country to study and acquire as much knowledge as possible for an enlightened future for themselves and the country. Youth must inculcate a sense of discipline, an analytical mind and respect for fellow human beings. This will make them good citizens of the country, conscious of their rights as well as their civic duties and responsibilities. For this, the institutions we establish must be centres of excellence which along with imparting knowledge to students also inculcate in them good values.

Strong social and community action in the country to remove social evils like dowry, child marriage and female feoticide should be undertaken. It is also necessary to educate people on the harmful effects of alcohol, drugs and necessary to educate people on the harmful effects of alcohol, drugs and intoxicating materials on the body and how to keep away from these. It is common knowledge that addiction is spoiling our people, including the youth and also destroying family life. They should also be educated on civic duties and how to be good citizens. Institutions must contribute in the efforts to create progressive societies. I understand that under the Kalyanamastu program thousands of young couples irrespective of caste, are given help to get married at no cost as the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams provides everything including Mangala surtam, new clothes and meals during mass marriages. This is an important service rendered to the community.

The Bhakti Channel that was launched today will be an important medium for developing a devotional attitude and for inculcating human qualities o f caring and compassion in all people. Our ancient scriputes have taught us tolerance and truth, extolled us to always perform our duty and to fulfill our Dharma. When every human being practices Dharma, society will be free from a number of social evils.

I am told that Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams is promoting the use of eco-friendly forms energy such as wind and solar energy. It has also undertaken some tree plantation activity and is making efforts to conserve rain water as well as ground water. Consciousness about the environment is extremely important to maintain harmony between man and nature. The world is faced with the challenge of climate change. Each individual can contribute by using the earth’s resources prudently and cutting wastage.. We have a responsibility to preserve the planet for the future generations.

Once again, I feel happy for having participated in the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Amruthotsavam and the honour of unveiling the pylon. I would encourage that efforts to render service to the pilgrims, devotees and the community must continue with dedication.

Earlier, the Honourable President of India has ingaurated the Amruthotsavams pyton at Alipiri and the Orinetal college new building at KT Road.

Search Engine Funds Test Cure

Cleveland, Ohio - (Website Hosting Directory) - September 26, 2008 - is funding the only clinical trial to cure type 1 diabetes, as it attempts to answer difficult questions.

The trial, conducted by Dr. Denise Faustman's Lab at the Massachusetts General Hospital, is a follow-up to the landmark study that permanently cured diabetic mice for the first time. They are testing their technique in humans with type 1 diabetes. (Watch Dr. Faustman explain how the diabetes cure works.)

Dr. Faustman remarked, ''My colleagues and I appreciate the support will provide for the clinical trial.'' is the result of a partnership between Bernard Farrell, and The project started in mid-2007, when Bernard Farrell launched the Diabetes Search Engine. Farrell is software developer and a leading voice in the diabetes community through his Diabetes Technology Blog.

Mr. Farrell was moved to support Dr. Faustman's research after learning that it was completely self-funded. Because the potential cure uses approved, patent-free drugs, the lab cannot get funding from pharmaceutical companies. Although phase 1 of the clinical trial is fully funded, Dr. Faustman will need $25 million to complete phase 2.
With collaboration from other diabetics, Mr. Farrell has added more than 1,200 sites about diabetes to the Search Engine, making it one of the most comprehensive resources about diabetes.

Mr. Farrell noted, ''If you have any questions about diabetes you'll get the answers through the Diabetes Search Engine.''
David Edelman, Founder of remarked, ''When someone clicks on a sponsored ad that appears alongside the results of a search on, a contribution is made to Dr. Faustman's research. We have entered a new era of grassroots activism where patients can directly fund research to improve their own lives. With each search, we are purchasing a small stake in an eventual cure for diabetes.''
Besides helping fund Dr. Faustman's research, the Diabetes Search Engine empowers patients with access to resources that they would typically not have access to.

Manny Hernandez, Founder of added, ''When you search for diabetes information on the web, you can get overwhelmed quite easily. Through this project, we hope to make the best resources easier to find for the patient looking for answers.''
The Diabetes Web Search can be found on Bernard's Diabetes Technology Blog, on the home page of and and in many other diabetes blogs and web sites. You can add the Diabetes Web Search box to your site, by visiting

Three Day Annual Pavirothavam begins

Temple Priests performing snapana Tirumanjanam

Tirumala 12 Aug (P.R.O) On the first of ongoing three day Annual Pavithrotsavam at Tirumala which began on Tuesday Aug 12, priests performed Snapana Tirumanjanam to the processional dieties of Lord Malayappaswamy and His consorts at Sampangi Prakaram inside Sri Vari Temple .

Pavithrotsava, an important three-day festival at the Tirumala temple, begins on August 12. Pavithrotsava will be observed at Tirumala. This is one of the important festivals at Tirumala with a hoary antiquity, agamic sanction, puranic reference and high religious significance. Basically during this utsava, the presiding deity and the other deities in the hilltown and in the temple itself are adorned with pavithras (sanctified garlands of thread). Homa is performed, vedic mantras are chanted, puranas are read. This utsava is penitential as well as propitiatory and its main objective is to get rid of the evil that might have been caused due to omissions and commissions in the performance of various rituals throughout the year. That is why this utsava is referred to severally as ``Dosha Nivaarana,'' ``Sarva Yajna Phalapradha,'' ``Sarva Doshopasamana,'' ``Sarva Tushtikara,'' ``Sarvakaamapradha, ``Sarvalokasantida.''

Pavithrotsava,as the very word indicates is derived from the combination of two words ``pavithra and utsava.'' Pavithra is a means towards purification. That is why a darba grass worn in a loose knot round the finger usually heralds the performance of any religious rite. The Jayakhya Samhita explains that pavithra protects one from evil.

The puranas also prescribe ``Pavithra Aaropana,'' i.e., adorning the deity with pavithra, as an integral part of the rituals during the worship of Lord Vishnu. For example, the agni purana specifies that the first day of a lunar fortnight either in the beginning of the month of Aashada or the end of the Krithika should be chosen for performing pavithrotsava for Lord Hari so as to earn riches! The Garuda Purana says that this rite should be done on the 12th day of the dark or bright fortnight. It is amazing to find the puranas even detailing the type of colour of the thread that should be used for preparing the pavithra.

The origin of Pavithrotsavam in Tirumala dates back to 1463 A.D. The stone inscription found on the northern wall of the Vagapadi verandah in the first ``Prakaara'' of the Tirumala templegives a very detailed account. The inscription refers even to the items of expenditure to be incurred in connection with the celebration of ``Pavithra Tirunal.''

The attention paid to details, especially in a stone inscription speaks volumes about the meticulous planning that went into the celebration of the Pavithrotsava.

The festival appears to have been celebrated till 1562 A.D. as we find numerous inscriptions referring to this Tirunal at Tirumalaiand the food offerings to be made during that festival, but suddenly after 1562, there is a gap, which makes one believe that perhaps this utsava was not celebrated as many of the villages endowed by the devotees for performing this festival might have been lost due to the various political changes at that time. This utsava was revived only about 38 years ago i.e. 1962.

This festival is celebrated for three days at Tirumala in the month of Aavani and is so planned as to conclude on Aavani Pournami day. The utsava is preceded by Ankurarpana the previous evening. The Ankurarpana and Mritsangrahana rituals are identical to those performed during Brahmotsava. Veda recitation is started after the Mritsangrahana ritual and this recitation of the Vedas concludes on the third day.

Aavahana is done in the Pradana Kumbha for Lord Vishnu and His Consort. There will be 16 other Kumbhas surrounding this Pradana Kumbha. The various mantras which are recited are believed to infuse voice vibrations which have great religious and spiritual force. It is this Kumbha which is taken to the Moolasthana on the concluding day of the Pavitrotsava and from that Kumbha the augmented spiritual power is believed to be transmitted to the Moola Vigraha (Kumbha Aavaahanam). The sanctified pavithras are offered to the various deities on the morning of the second day of the utsava.

TTD Executive Officer Sri K.V.Ramanachary, Spl Officer Sri A.V.Dharma Reddy, Board Member Dr. Chadalawada Sudha, Temple DyE.O Sri Siddiah, Peishkars Sri Murali, Sri Naga Reddy, Sri Varma and devotees took part.
