Obama, Sarkozy hail Indian elections

NEW DELHI: World leaders congratulated the people of India for the successful conclusion of general elections and paid tributes to the country’s vibrancy in upholding the values of freedom and pluralism.

In his message, U.S. President Barack Obama said the elections had strengthened India’s vibrant democracy and upheld the values of freedom and pluralism that made the country an example for all. “While the world awaits the formation of a new government in India, the U.S. recognises the significance of the election for the people of India, who remain the strength and foundation of the country’s prosperity and democracy.”

He said he looked forward to continuing to work with the Indian government to enhance the warm partnership between the two countries.

President of France Nicolas Sarkozy too congratulated the Indian government for the remarkable conduct of the elections. He sent a message to President Pratibha Patil. He paid tributes to the faithfulness of the largest democracy in the world to the values of liberty, people’s sovereignty and respect of diversity in secularism, a French Embassy release said here.

It said Mr. Sarkozy reaffirmed France’s support for India so that the latter might occupy its rightful place in international multilateral institutions to build a controlled globalisation.
