U.S. envoy meets Advani

NEW DELHI: United States’ Charge d’Affaires Peter Burleigh on Wednesday met Bharatiya Janata Party leader L. K. Advani for “routine consultations,” said sources in the U.S. Embassy.

Categorically denying that the meeting, as well as the interaction with the former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandradbabu Naidu, had political overtones, the sources said the intention was to get acquainted with the two leaders.

The meeting with Mr. Naidu and Mr. Advani had “nothing to do” with the politics of the country and the U.S., “categorically denies any attempt to interfere in India’s democratic political process,” the sources said.

“Some sections of the media were projecting the meeting in a distorted manner,” they added.

Mr. Advani and Mr. Burleigh discussed bilateral ties and the regional situation, especially the developments in Pakistan. They also exchanged views on India-U.S. relations and their future prospects.

Mr. Burleigh met BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu a few days ago and the two discussed the India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal as well as the developments in Pakistan.
