UN award for website

GUNTUR: Guntur-based Friends To Support Organisation (F2S) maintaining an online database of voluntary blood donors through the www.friends2support.org website, has received United Nations World Youth Summit Award for its work on improving the awareness on health issues in society using Internet. The award will be presented to Sk. K. Shareef, one of the founders of the organisation at Monterrey, in Mexico during the United Nations Global Forum on ICT Development and WSA Winners Celebrations from Sept 2 to 4. The presentation was originally scheduled for June 12, but in view of ‘swine flu’ it has been put off to September. The Friends 2 Support is WSYA Runner-up for 2009 and only winner from India in any of the five categories in which awards were announced recently, Mr. Shareef told mediapersons on Sunday.

Global contest

The United Nations has invited him to be part of the awards presentation ceremony in Mexico to showcase to the world leaders on the concept the F2S had adopted. The World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) is a global contest for online or mobile initiatives to raise awareness and help resolve the most pressing global issues. The World Summit Youth Award showcases the project as one by young developers and serves as a platform for people from all UN member states to work together on the efforts of reaching the Millennium Development Goals.

It has been adjudged runner-up in Category 1: (Fight Hunger, Poverty & Disease) at the fifth edition of the awards given by UNIDO. This year, from among 612 entries screened, Friends To Support was lone finalist, he added.
